The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has secured multiple arrest warrants for 37-year-old Kory Matyas Karpich of Gainesville, following an officer-involved shooting and chase that ended in Bibb County.
BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has secured multiple arrest warrants for 37-year-old Kory Matyas Karpich of Gainesville, following an officer-involved shooting and chase that ended in Bibb County.
The incident began in Byron on Monday, according to a GBI news release.
Byron Police Department initially requested GBI’s assistance for an independent investigation following the shooting. Preliminary information indicates it all started when Byron Police received a tip from the 911 center about a stolen Silver 2018 Volkswagen Atlas from the Atlanta area possibly being located in Byron. Police discovered the car unoccupied at a McDonald’s off Highway 49 in Byron.
The GBI says Karpich exited the McDonald’s and entered the stolen vehicle, refusing to obey officers’ instructions, and that’s when a Byron police officer broke a car window in an attempt to apprehend him. The officer then deployed a taser, which was ineffective.
Karpich then drove away and crashed into both the McDonald’s building and a police vehicle before fleeing the scene. Officers fired multiple shots, striking Karpich, who then led police on a chase that ended in Bibb County.
Karpich was taken into custody and received medical treatment at a center in Macon. The GBI says he is expected to recover from his injuries.
His charges are as follows:
- Possession of drug related objects
- Possession of methamphetamine
- Fleeing or alluding a police officer
- Obstruction
- Theft by receiving/Possessing Stolen Property.
Upon completion of the GBI’s investigation, the case will be handed over to the Bibb Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for further review.
