JONES COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A Boil Water Advisory has been issued for multiple areas in Jones County, including the 300 through 800 blocks of River North Boulevard and neighboring communities, after a water main break on Thursday.

The Jones County Water System announced the advisory as a cautionary measure against microbial contamination following a loss of water pressure.

“There is the potential a health hazard may exist due to microbial contamination in these areas without positive pressure,” Jones County Water Superintendent Brandon Stark said.

Stark says a county water crew was preparing to take the River North Water Tower out of service for inspections, re-coating and disinfection on Thursday, and that while the crew was beginning to isolate the water tower, a sudden burst of pressure happened in the water system, causing a 4-inch water main on River North Circle to burst.

“The crew rushed to the scene for proper repairs,” Stark wrote in an email.

Affected areas include River North Circle, Wimbledon Lane, Wimbledon Court, Trophy Court, Eagle Drive, Eagle Crest, Nassau Court, Wedgewood Court, Masters Cove, Horseshoe Bend, River Hills Lane, River Hills Ridge, River Forest, Plantation Drive, Southern Pines, Old Ridge Road, River Pointe Drive, River Knoll and Shoreline Drive.

Residents should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and preparing food. The CDC says water should be brought to a quick bubble and continued boiling for at least one minute before cooling and using it.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice while the Jones County Water System conducts testing to ensure public safety.

The community will receive immediate notification once the advisory is lifted.

After the advisory is lifted, residents are instructed to flush faucets for no less than two minutes before consumption or food preparation.

Concerns or questions can be directed to the Jones County Water Department at (478) 743-3211.
