Steve DeLay talks Macon Bacon, Florence Flamingos sale in LinkedIn update

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Steve DeLay, the owner of the Macon Bacon and Florence Flamingos, is clarifying details about the sale of his two collegiate summer baseball teams.

In a LinkedIn video posted Monday, DeLay responded to questions about his decision to sell the teams and also spoke about his future involvement in the sports industry.

DeLay announced the sale of the teams in a LinkedIn post earlier this month, detailing his journey with the Macon Bacon, a team launched in July 2017 that quickly gained national attention and has achieved consistent sell-outs. He also wrote about the Florence Flamingos, which he acquired in October 2020. DeLay said that team, based in Florence, South Carolina, sold out every weekend game in the first two years under his ownership and now plays in a new stadium that opened in 2022.

“Macon and Florence are now successful franchises, built on solid fundamentals, great cities and staffs that are led by strong Presidents,” he wrote. “They are poised to continue to grow. But, it’s time to do something new, and as always I am not opposed to going outside the box to achieve the right objective.”

DeLay added he didn’t need to sell the teams.

“This isn’t a distress auction,” he wrote. “But I would like for them, like the dogs I rescue, to go to a home.”

In Monday’s follow-up video, he told prospective buyers both teams were strong financially and were also in good managerial health and expressed openness to selling them together or separately.

“It’s all about the right place, right time,” he said.

DeLay also revealed his future plans, which include focusing on charitable endeavors like animal rescues and remaining active in the sports industry through consulting and teaching.

“Is another team in my future? Who knows,” he said. “Right situation, right place, something close by that I can really get my fingers dirty and get involved in, that’s entirely possible. Got to be the right partners, right situation. But anything’s possible.”
