MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bill Marinella Casting has announced a casting call for the Netflix film “The Piano Lesson,” produced by Denzel Washington and directed by Malcolm Washington.

A Bill Marinella Casting Facebook post said the search is on for “new faces only” for a 1936 factory workers scene in the upcoming film, which is an adaptation of August Wilson’s play.

The film, set during the aftermath of the Great Depression, follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom family piano, “which documents the family history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor,” Netflix.com reported.

Netflix says the film features a star-studded cast that carries over much of the cast from the show’s recent Broadway revival, including Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington.

The casting call, which says filming will start in Macon on Friday, January 5, 2024, asks applicants to upload a recent selfie without makeup and a period piece photo of themselves as a 1936 factory worker.

“NO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS OR FILTER PHOTOS PLEASE!” the post says.

The pay rate for filming is $154 for a 12-hour shift, plus crew mileage. Fittings are required and will be paid, with fitting dates scheduled between December 18, 19 and 20 “in the Atlanta area.”

The casting call is seeking African American men and women, as well as Caucasian men and women. Men’s sizes are specified up to waist size 38 with female sizes up to size 10. The call time and the exact nature of the shoot (afternoon to night, but not overnight) have not been announced.

The post also details specific appearance requirements: no dreads, braids, bleached or multi-colored hair, nose rings, ear gauges, neck or face tattoos are allowed for the 1936 scene.
