TECH BYTE: Goodbye IPOD

(41NBC/WMGT) — From cassette tapes to CDs, we’ll soon be saying goodbye to another pastime – the iPod. Hard to believe, but the digital music player has been around for more than 20 years, and it won’t be for much longer.

Apple first introduced the iPod on October 23, 2001. That meant music junkies didn’t have to carry around CDs, and those bulky CD players anymore. They could put all of their music on one device. The only other thing needed was your headphones. The original iPod could hold 1,000 songs, had a 10-hour battery, and fit in a 6.5-ounce package.
As it does with all of its devices, Apple upgraded its iPod over the years. The latest version is the iPod touch (7th generation), which was introduced on May 28, 2019. It has an A10 Fusion chip, enables immersive augmented reality experiences, and Group FaceTime. It also has 256GB of storage.

Despite improvements over the years, the iPod’s not as popular anymore. When they’re on the go, most people just listen to their music on their smartphones, which is why Apple is discontinuing the device. The iPod touch will be available while supplies last online and in stores. The price ranges from about $200 to $400, depending on how much storage you want. It comes in a variety of colors, from silver and space gray, to gold, blue, red and pink.
