How the AAA is helping drivers decide

Electric cars are becoming a lot more popular these days, but how do you know if they’re right for you? The American Automobile Association is out with a Used EV Buyer’s Guide, to help drivers decide if going electric is right for them. The Auto Club Group found more consumers are looking for cars that are a little more high tech, and better on gas.

Megan Cooper explains that electric vehicles are becoming more viable options for consumers. She says that after having been on the market for a few years, EVs are now appearing on the used car market. This opens up new possibilities to consumers searching for an electric vehicle.

If you are considering buying an EV, Cooper has some advice that may help you decide. She recommends that consumers compare prices before purchasing a vehicle. Consumers should also weigh the upfront costs against potential long term savings. EVs come at a high price but could save you money on repairs and maintenance down the road.

Those looking for an EV should also consider where they live, according to Cooper. How far your car can travel between charges and the availability of charging stations in your area could have a major impact on your daily drive. She says, “The basics of an electric vehicle are what it would look like potentially for you to charge that vehicle, what the range is for particular vehicles…”

Anyone who plans to buy a used electric vehicle should make sure that the battery is in good condition. This critical part of your car is very expensive to replace. Cooper warns, “…You want to find out how long that battery is expected to last, and then if there are any warranties on that battery, you want to make sure that there’s plenty of time left on that…” She also urges buyers to be certain that there are no surprises in warranties or coverage.

But, in the end, the choice is yours. Whether it’s an EV or gas powered, the AAA says to get the one you believe is best for you and your family.
