MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — If you plan on Christmas shopping after Thanksgiving, you might want to save some of your budget for Small Business Saturday.

Each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, shoppers can support their city’s economy by shopping at locally owned businesses.

According to Vice President of External Affairs for NewTown Macon, Emily Hopkins, more retail businesses have opened in Macon this year than in previous years.

“The thing about our locally owned and operated businesses is that they’re our friends and neighbors,” said Hopkins. “So the people you have a relationship with, you’re excited to see when you go and support that business. And every dollar you spend six, eight, four or $0.68 stays in the local community.”

This year, downtown Macon is doing something special.

For each hour of Shop Small Saturday, different restaurants and retailers will be offering discounts ranging from 25 to 50% off, buy one get one specials, or free gifts as part of the businesses’ “Shopping Power Hour”.

At MD Exchange antique shop, everything will be marked down by 30% during its power hour.

The store’s co-owner, Dawn Spicer, says the promotion helped MD Exchange get established as the first retailer on Forsyth street.

“Really it just helps get people in the door. Once we get people in the store, they really do love it,” Spicer said. “And then we have so many return customers.”

Bear’s Books is another Forsyth Street business participating in Shop Small Saturday.

The shop will be offering 30% off coffee table books, and one of a kind items you can only get during the promotion.

Store owner Margaret Harrington says this can help Bear’s Books build a strong foundation.

“We’re a new business and this time of year is critical to our success. So we’re really looking forward to strong community support during the holiday season.”
