TECH BYTE: Women’s History Month

(41NBC/WMGT) —You don’t need to be in school to learn about some amazing female trailblazers, you can get your “herstory” lessons right on your phone.

Like the name, the Women’s History Month Trivia app uses games to help you learn about 31 different women in March. There’s a new trivia quiz about a different woman – like Florence Nightingale and Marie Curie– each day. Once you take the quiz, the WHM app gives you a short synopsis of the woman of the day, and even has a link to learn more about her story. Adding the corresponding widget to your home screen also gives you empowering messages and quotes for the featured woman of the day.

Another way you can expand your women’s history knowledge is through the Lessons in Herstory app. It can be a more hands on way to learn about women like Annie Oakley, Lotta Crabtree, and Harriet Tubman. The app uses AR to bring forgotten stories of women to life, right from your history textbook. Using select history books, scan any picture of a man in the book, and the app will unlock a related story about an important woman. If you don’t have a textbook, you can still use the app with pictures on lessonsinherstory.com.

NASA’s First Woman app lets you experience NASA’s first interactive graphic novel on your smartphone. The app tells the fictional story of Callie Rodriguez – the first female astronaut and person of color to explore the Moon. It uses life-size scenes from the graphic novel, and explores NASA’s technologies, which helped Callie and can also help real astronauts sustainably live on the Moon. The goal of these apps is to inspire the next generation of women to achieve great things, and make another mark in herstory.
